Dr M, a distinguished retired academic, who has read an early draft of  the novel, wrote after reading the beginning of the story:

"In the true realist tradition, you have objectively drawn a character who, step by step, degenerates from questionable business ethics to disastrous family ethics; firstly, he waltzes out of the firm and cheats his grasping partner instead of negotiating, then he damages his reputation by cheating a client;  worst of all, he drinks away money that should have gone to subsistence for his family.  And now he is trying to cover up by lying to the family.  This has to be what Hippocrates called the ¨crisis of the disease¨:  he is in a state of moral degradation so grave that it is now either kill or  cure.   If this had been a Zola novel I would have laid down the book at this point and read no more, confidently predicting the inevitable (l'Assomoir).

But, since it is a story by Adam Yamey, I shall read on."
